Our research revealed that molecules like aromatic aldehydes can deliver high-value resin properties. Among these, 5-HMF stands out for its versatility and sustainability.

5-HMF – A Safe, Sustainable Platform Molecule

5-HMF is a 100% biobased, non-toxic monomer with exceptional potential to replace traditional chemicals in resins and polymers. Its unique structure, combining a furan ring with aldehyde and alcohol functions, makes it a platform molecule for countless derivatives.

  • Fully bio-sourced and SVHC-free
  • Compatible with industrial processes
  • Enables high-performance, sustainable formulations

 

In partnership with IFPEN, MICHELIN ResiCare has developed a first-of-its-kind European production process for 5-HMF from fructose. Our plant which is set to launch in 2027, will produce 3,000 tons of industrial-grade HMF per year.
