Driving Innovation with 5-HMF and Humins
At MICHELIN ResiCare, we are at the forefront of developing bio-based monomers that enable safer and more sustainable industrial chemistry. Our focus is on two key building blocks for next-generation resins and polymers: 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and Humins.
We address sustainability challenges at their root by mastering monomer design and sourcing. This approach starts at the molecular level rather than the formulation stage.
Why Monomers Matter
Monomers are the foundation of advanced materials. By replacing petroleum-derived chemicals with bio-sourced alternatives, we help manufacturers to reduce their environmental impact while meeting performance and regulatory requirements. This upstream approach provides more control over toxicity, the carbon footprint, and the long-term availability of raw materials throughout the entire value chain.
Our research revealed that molecules like aromatic aldehydes can deliver high-value resin properties. Among these, 5-HMF stands out for its versatility and sustainability.
5-HMF – A Safe, Sustainable Platform Molecule
5-HMF is a 100% biobased, non-toxic monomer with exceptional potential to replace traditional chemicals in resins and polymers. Its unique structure, combining a furan ring with aldehyde and alcohol functions, makes it a platform molecule for countless derivatives.
This versatility allows for the development of high-performance materials and a shift away from fossil-based and hazardous chemistries.
Why choose 5-HMF?
Fully bio-sourced and SVHC-free
Compatible with industrial processes
Enables high-performance, sustainable formulations
In partnership with IFPEN, MICHELIN ResiCare has developed a first-of-its-kind European production process for 5-HMF from fructose. Our plant which is set to launch in 2027, will produce 3,000 tons of industrial-grade HMF per year.
Humins – Turning By-Products into Value
Humins are by-products formed during 5-HMF production. Rather than viewing them as waste, we recognise their potential: humins are integrated into agronomy applications, supporting a circular economy and reducing the environmental footprint.
By valuing humins, MICHELIN ResiCare strengthens its dedication to resource efficiency and closed-loop innovation.
Benefits of humins:
Biosourced and carbon-sequestering
Classified as polymers under REACH
Valorized in adhesives and crop science

Our monomers
They are the molecular building blocks of resins. Replacing petroleum-based monomers with bio-based and non-toxic ones is the most impactful way to reduce toxicity and fossil dependency.
5-HMF (5-Hydroxymethylfurfural) and one specific polyphenol. Both are derived from biomass and eliminate hazardous substances found in traditional thermosets.
Its structure (furan ring + aldehyde/alcohol) makes it a versatile platform molecule. It is 100% bio-based and non-toxic (not meeting SVHC criterias as defined by ECHA).
A first-of-its-kind European plant (in partnership with IFPEN) is launching in 2027 with a capacity of 3,000 tons/year of industrial-grade 5-HMF.
It ensures supply chain sovereignty, reduces dependency on worldwide imports, and guarantees traceability/quality for regulated industries.
It acts as a substitute for aromatic aldehydes and other petroleum-derived molecules used in phenolic and formaldehyde resin systems.
