Cerisea Project – Industrializing 5-HMF for Sustainable Chemistry
Cerisea, Michelin ResiCare’s latest breakthrough in green chemistry, is focused on the industrial-scale production of 5-HMF (5-Hydroxymethylfurfural). This bio-sourced, non-toxic molecule has a wide range of industrial applications. With backing from a €60 million investment, Cerisea is set to build the world’s largest 5-HMF production unit in Péage-de-Roussillon, France. This marks a significant milestone in the shift from laboratory innovation to industrial reality.
By increasing the production of a molecule long recognized for its potential, but limited by availability, Cerisea addresses one of the main barriers to adopting bio-based chemistry: reliable, large-scale access. The project is designed to secure a long-term supply, support downstream industrial applications, and enable manufacturers to confidently integrate 5-HMF into existing formulations.
What is 5-HMF and Why Does It Matter
“The Sleeping Giant”
Often referred to as a "sleeping giant," 5-HMF is a versatile platform molecule derived from fructose through green chemistry processes. Its unique chemical structure allows it to replace hazardous, fossil-based ingredients across multiple value chains. At MICHELIN ResiCare, 5-HMF is used in non-toxic adhesive resins, reducing health risks for operators and end users while maintaining high performance standards.
The industrial availability of 5-HMF is expected to unlock a European market exceeding 40,000 tons by 2030, creating new opportunities for sustainable materials in various sectors.

Cerisea unites leading partners to advance large-scale bio-based chemistry in Europe. This flagship initiative promotes circularity, local sourcing, and industrial resilience by replacing fossil-based inputs with plant-based alternatives, while enhancing European autonomy in sustainable materials.
By anchoring production in Europe, Cerisea strengthens regional value chains and reduces dependence on imported petrochemical intermediates.
Collaborative Innovation for a Greener Future
Cerisea is supported by France 2030 (ADEME) and the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). This initiative unites 13 partners, including ADM, Avantium, Arkema, and Kraton, as well as leading research institutions.
This collaborative framework combines industrial expertise, research excellence, and public support to accelerate the transition from innovation to large-scale industrial deployment.
